As the industry changes the general notion continues; “If you haven’t migrated to the cloud you are falling behind.” businesses are scatering to two major players and they are Amazons AWS platform and its major rival, Microsoft Azure. This article is designed for you to gain some understanding of the AWS v AZURE war and the difference between the two, so you can be ahead of the curve and prepare for a sustainable and most of all cloud infrastructure that can scale with your business projections.

AWS started in 2004 with a single service, SQS – but quickly expanded to the list of services that we will be covering shortly below.

Azure hasn’t been around for as long, having started in 2010 they were 6 late to the cloud computing game, before branching into different Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) solutions. We will also be covering their offerings below.

Each cloud provider as similar as they are both offer a different set of features/capabilities to suit different requirements – this is why this article is perfect, you need to first understand what your specific requirements are. Once these have been defined, you can refer to this article to see what solution best suits your needs. In this article I will compare the difference between Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Azure to give you the vital information that will help you make this decision.

If your business requirements were just to host a single application/service rather than a complex infrastructure, the decision between AWS v Azure will likely come down to factors such as cost, performance, security, and uptime (Covered later in this post). A virtual server is just a virtual server after all. The real area that these providers differ in their offerings is through the services they deliver around their compute cloud.

AWS v AZURE

There is a huge number of services to complement their respective infrastructure services. When it comes down to AWS v AZURE war, we have to look at their core offerings and some of the core services often use different service names to actually mean the same thing, like this below table shows.

Comparison

First step, is to decide what your business requirements are, you can determine which provider will best fit your needs. Then you will need to asses the costs.

Cost

Obviously, when selecting AWS v AZURE you will need to assess what your costs will be in whatever decision you make. here are each price calculators for platforms.

Azure:

Pricing Calculators

If you deal with an MSP like Tech Success that is a Microsoft partner, you will be able to get a discount on these prices – another factor worth considering is if you don’t know how to assess all of this yourself, consider partnering with an MSP. It’s also useful to check if signing up for a contracted time period will deliver any further cost savings.

The Hard Part

The hardest part of the AWS v AZURE war is working out which of these two cloud providers delivers the best performance for your particular use case is the performance analysis. There are numerous articles that have been published which test CPU/Disk/Network performance (Such as this one). However, unless this exactly matches what you are going to use the platform for, you are going to get different results.

A nice simple strategy that you may look to implement to assess what is the performance required to benchmark your business is the free trials that both services offer and compare results. The pricing of both AWS and Azure cloud offerings allows you to “Pay-as-you-Go”, so running these tests should be comparatively affordable for all businesses no matter the size.

Conclusion

Look there isn’t a wrong answer to choosing between these two cloud giants however, choosing the ‘correct’ provider will make your new business cloud infrastructure a much happier place. This, in turn, will make your business stronger and more resilient to the changes in your industry.
